Relationship Management for Grantmakers
OVERVIEW
As Submittable’s target use case shifted to grants management, legacy architecture decisions were stifling our customers’ ability to quickly access meaningful data about their applicants.
Through generative research and concept testing, I led research that defined requirements for Submittable’s first step in scaling towards on-platform CRM functionality.

CONTEXT
Submittable is a submission management platform where anyone can create application based programs, build forms, collect submissions, and make awards. It was originally designed for creatives, but since 2020, grant makers and their applicants have made up the vast majority of our user base. Unlike creatives, grant applicants typically submit applications on behalf of their entire organization. But because of the way Submittable was originally designed (purpose built for individual submissions) every submission was tied to a single account holder’s name.
This created a problem for our grant making customers who need access to organization level data, like award and submission history, in order to make informed funding decisions. Our customers were spending countless hours digging for information about their applicants (and their applicants were spending precious time recreating the same application data year over year). We received consistent customer feedback tied to this issue and lost multiple enterprise deals in 2023 because of this gap in functionality. I led research to better understand these pain points and gather feedback on an MVP solution.
MY WORK
I interviewed 20 grant makers and applicants in a two-part study, first to uncover use cases and pain points, and then to collect early feedback on our initial design concepts.
🔍 Ran stakeholder interviews with the most tenured Submittable employees that had familiarity with the legacy designs to get a deep understanding of the issue
🧠 Created customer & applicant journey maps to streamline insights for a stakeholder workshop, where we created an opportunity solution tree
🎨 Gathered quick customer feedback on wireframes using RITE to test our early assumptions before increasing fidelity in the designs
IMPACT
This research informed requirements for the ability to link applications to an affiliated org, enabling administrators to view an org’s history and better align funding with their objectives
💸 Created a new revenue stream for this feature via upsell opportunity for customers on Submittable’s starter plan
🛠️ Reduced engineering cost by collaborating on a prioritization matrix that evaluated highest value/lowest lift feature opportunities
💡Surfaced key findings that informed future roadmap items, such as custom field creation and retroactive application linking
